What is Yoga therapy

At its core, yoga is an empowering, transformative practice. Yoga Therapy uses these qualities to supports well-being through a whole-person approach and well-researched practices. The emphasis is on your individual experience, your own power and capacity to find balance and wellness in your own life. Generally, in yoga therapy we mean to:

  • support your well-being as a whole

  • work pain-free and with what you are experiencing at the present moment

  • practice safely in a safe environment

  • move, breathe and relax

Of course, when working together we will include your personal intentions.

In case of diagnosed medical issues, it is important to know that Yoga Therapy is not an alternative treatment. It is meant to support individuals through their healing process alongside medical healthcare.

Yoga Therapy Sessions

Yoga Therapy sessions are personalized to you and are therefore (typically) one on one sessions. Since our focus is your experience, your feedback is essential to the process. Our Yoga Therapy sessions will be a product of our cooperation.

Yoga Therapy takes a biopsychosocial-spiritual approach. This means that we always see you as a whole and take into account other circumstances apart from physical ones when preparing Yoga Therapy sessions. To do this, we start with an intake meeting, which is a meaningful conversation about the issues you want to work with (whether they are physical, emotional, breath-related, etc.) and try to paint a fuller picture of you and your life rather than look at the issue in an isolated manner.

After the intake, we will have an experimental movement and breath session that will help me prepare subsequent sessions tailored for you. To design the next sessions, I will use research-based tools of yoga: yoga postures, stretches, breathing exercises, meditation, relaxation techniques and more. A session typically lasts 90 minutes, but know that we can always adjust according to your needs and circumstances.

Practical Information

Sessions take place in Heart Yoga Studio, Samuel van Houtenstraat 28 in Utrecht. In special circumstances we can also work from home, or a different location.

When starting to work together, our first session will always be an intake session and our second session will always be an experimental movement and breath session. After these sessions we will continue with our tailored sessions.

60 minutes sessions are €50; 90 minutes sessions are €70. I believe that everyone deserves the experience of exploring and connecting mind and body. Lower funds shouldn't hold you back, so get in touch and we'll find an affordable arrangement.

About Shimi

In early 2017, after practicing yoga and experiencing its benefits for many years, I decided to follow a Yoga Teacher Training, so I can share my love of yoga through teaching. The more teaching experience I gained, the more I wanted to know. Therefore, after my initial training, I continuously followed workshops and educational programs to deepen my knowledge of the human body, the mind and the connection between them.

In 2021 I discovered Yoga Therapy and immediately felt a strong connection. Yoga Therapy educational programs are very comprehensive and include, along with rich theory, practice under the supervision of an experienced yoga therapist. My extensive experience and education equipped me with many tools for exploration of the physical, mental and emotional and the union (=yoga) between them.
